Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

are the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that students possess and can demonstrate upon completing a course or program of study.

Institutional Student Learning Outcomes

On October 27, 2008, permission was obtained from the WASC Schools Division to supplant Expected Student Learning Results with Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs). In its request, San Diego College of Continuing Education gave as reasons for the transition from ESLRs to SLOs as the need for consistency and efficiency within the District and its three colleges who were also requesting reaffirmation of accreditation in 2010. Following are the current institutional SLOs:

1 Social Responsibility

SDCCE students demonstrate interpersonal skills by learning and working cooperatively in a diverse environment.

2 Effective Communication

SDCCE students demonstrate effective communication skills.

3 Critical Thinking

SDCCE students critically process information, make decisions, and solve problems independently or cooperatively.

4 Personal and Professional Development

SDCCE students pursue short term and life-long learning goals, mastering necessary skills and using resource management and self advocacy skills to cope with changing situations in their lives.

5 Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Anti-racism and Access

SDCCE students critically and ethically engage with local and global issues using principles of equity, civility, and compassion as they apply their knowledge and skills: exhibiting awareness, appreciation, respect, and advocacy for diverse individuals, groups, and cultures.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

The program SLOs have a relationship to the institutional SLOs and are customized to fit the distinctive curriculum of the various programs in SDCCE. Following are the current program SLOs.

Automotive, Skilled & Technical Trades (ASTT)

Mission Statement: Automotive, Skilled & Technical Trades (ASTT) provides adults with vocational education and job training in a variety of disciplines (automotive, auto body, welding, metal fabrication, plumbing, heating/ventilation/air conditioning, electronics, pre-apprenticeship, upholstery). Through an organized sequence of courses, individuals receive rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical skill proficiency that meet industry standards. Upon completion, students will be prepared for either careers in current/emerging professions with an industry recognized certificate, or further education with potential college credit toward an associate’s degree.

Business, Computers and Information Technology

Mission Statement: The Business, Computers and Information Technology Program provides adults open access to transformational career technical education programs. Through skill building, upskilling and reskilling, BIT provides the San Diego community the opportunity to transition to college and work by providing hands-on and project based training in current technology, foundational skills, and business practices with real-work simulations. Lead by industry experienced instructors; these programs build student confidence for future employment, promotion, and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Business, Computers and Information Technology Department SLOs

  1. Students completing a BIT software course will be able to demonstrate the use of the software tools to effectively communicate with others in person, with paper documents or online.
  2. BIT students will demonstrate the capability to work in teams of other diverse individuals to apply Information Technology solutions to a problem.
  3. BIT students will demonstrate the ability to use Information Technology and software tools to support decision processes and critical thinking.
  4. BIT students will pursue continued Information Technology education to complete short term goals such as website development, and also continue with long term programs that will keep them current in this rapidly changing field.

Child Development

Mission Statement: Child development students acquire an understanding of their important role as a primary teacher of the children in their care. Through exposure to child development principles and opportunities to practice and master skills that complement each child’s age appropriate needs, students learn lifelong skills leading to careers in child development, as well as successful and effective parenting.

Child Development Department SLOs

  1. Critically assess significant systems that influence the development and well-being of children, families and communities.
  2. Demonstrate the skills necessary to provide nurturing and ethicalcaregiving based on theory, practice and recent research in the field of child development
  3. Effectively communicate with children, families and industry professionals across diverse populations and lifestyles.
  4. Examine specialized vocational paths to integrate caregivingstrategies that support inclusion and respect to their career and life goals.

Counseling and Student Success

Mission Statement: Counseling and Student Success ensures student success by providing support services in the following areas: orientation; assessment for placement into classes; academic, career, college transition and personal counseling. Counselors are also available to assist with the development of a student education plan to support your educational and career goals.

Counseling and Student Success Program SLOs

  1. Students will know the steps, resources, and choices to define, clarify or achieve their goals.
  2. Students will know and be able to utilize basic information regarding registration procedures and educational options offered through SDCCE and SDCCD.
  3. Students will know basic information on student rights and responsibilities.
  4. Students will know about available career resources and services.

Disability Support Programs and Services

Mission Statement: Disability Support Programs and Services (DSPS) offers a variety of classes and services designed to facilitate the success of students with disabilities in reaching their educational, personal and vocational goals.

DSP&S Department SLOs

  1. Students will manage the positive and negative forces in their lives to persist in class as they pursue lifelong learning.
  2. Students will establish a goal and make progress toward that goal.
  3. Students will make progress toward mastering skills addressed in class.
  4. Students will use self advocacy skills to cope with changing situations in their lives.

Emeritus

Mission Statement: The Emeritus Program provides adults 55+ the opportunity to acquire a quality education specifically designed to offer lifelong learning opportunities in the areas of positive aging: personal growth, critical thinking, independence, community engagement, advocacy for self and others, mental and physical well-being, creativity, self-expression, and economic self-sufficiency.

Emeritus Department SLOs

  1. Social responsibility: Emeritus students acquire interpersonal skills to function effectively in a multicultural and diverse environment by comparing and evaluating their work in a respectful manner.
  2. Effective Communication: Emeritus students practice collaborative endeavors as they communicate facts, ideas, and feelings clearly by practicing verbal and non-verbal techniques.
  3. Critical Thinking: Emeritus students work toward the accomplishment of lifelong learning goals through education designed to engage them in interactive communicative activities that promote critical thinking.
  4. Personal and Professional Development: Emeritus students engage in learning activities to promote positive and successful aging in the 21st century.

English as a Second Language and Citizenship

Mission Statement: English as a Second Language and Citizenship offers up-to-date English language instruction to learners seeking to communicate with English speakers, acquire basic literacy skills, learn about the culture and customs of the United States and fulfill their goals as family members, workers, community participants, and lifelong learners.

English as a Second Language and Citizenship Department SLOs

  1. ESL students effectively listen to and speak with people of diverse backgrounds to fulfill communication tasks as workers, family members, community members, and/or lifelong learners.
  2. ESL students demonstrate appropriate reading and critical thinking skills to process information related to their roles as workers, family members, community members, and/or lifelong learners.
  3. ESL students demonstrate effective writing skills to fulfill writing tasks as workers, family members, community members, and/or lifelong learners.

Healthcare Careers (HCC)

Mission Statement: Healthcare Careers provides education and training in entry level healthcare careers (Personal Care Assistant/Caregiver, Nursing Assistant (NA) Training, Nurse Assistant Acute Care, Nurse Assistant Rehabilitative, Nurse Assistant in Behavioral Health). These programs offer training in health care specific skills as well as providing the basic educational skills and career paths to assist the individual to transition to Healthcare and Nursing Programs offered by the San Diego Community College District and other local community and baccalaureate colleges.

Healthcare Careers Department SLOs

  1. A program graduate will be able to apply the knowledge gained from the CNA course to pass the California state written and practical certification examination.
  2. A program graduate will be able to efficiently identify a patient change of condition and effectively communicate such changes to the nurse.
  3. A program graduate will have the skills to assess patient vital signs and know the difference between normal and abnormal.

High School/GED Preparation

Mission Statement: High School/GED Preparation offers flexible, accessible, up-to-date programs for adults seeking basic literacy in reading, mathematics, completion of high school, GED/high school equivalency, competency in the English language, citizenship, vocational skills or enrichment.

High School/GED Preparation Department SLOs

  1. HS/ASE/ABE students will demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of a course objective by applying it to a current event/issue.
  2. HS/ASE/ABE students will formulate a goal, set-up a plan of action, and evaluate success.
  3. HS/ASE/ABE students will describe how they would integrate a course principle into a real life situation.

Hospitality and Consumer Sciences (HCS)

Mission Statement:Students completing courses or programs in Continuing Education's Hospitality and Consumer Sciences department will gain knowledge and skills in any of the possible subject matter offerings (foods/nutrition/culinary arts/hospitality/fashion production/fashion/merchandising /textiles/interior design/life management/consumer issues and personal development) in order to prepare for vocational careers in the above and to positively affect one's quality of life.

Hospitality and Consumer Sciences Department SLOs

  1. Students completing a food/nutrition course or program will be able to demonstrate and apply concepts, techniques, and related skills through hands-on food preparation, demonstration, nutrition education, and group learning tasks to enhance personal and professional development within the hospitality industry.
  2. Students completing a fashion production course or program will be able to understand and apply concepts, technologies-related skills, and techniques by completing class projects.
